oceanpupsHome that our feet may leave, but not our hearts – Oliver Wendall Holmes, Sr.

The weekend weather forecast is beautiful, cool with the sun shining, a great time to head to our home near the coast.  Typically the default topic of conversation – the weather – has been offering the gamut of possibilities. It has me thinking. DH-32 Those cold, rainy days and evenings conjures the need to be home.  Our family up north enduring snowstorms haven’t had much choice but to cocoon.  deepriverviewWith the weather offering a roulette of rain, cold and snow, for some, the importance for the comforts of inside and to LOVE our home are more important than ever.

shoppingUnfortunately my clients are in the transition of loving their homes and wanting to recreate their living space to obtain that feeling.  In order to create that atmosphere I need to tap into the fundamental requirements of my client and the function of the space.  Infusing inspiration and the tried and true elements of Interior Decoration.  Each client and each project creates a need and my search begins.  From furniture to accessories, paintings to fabrics and all of the in between.   Selection matters and ultimately must pass the test of Love.  Much more than just shopping, there is an art to the finding.

decoratingblogIt always surprises me when a client doubts their affections.  Worried what their best friend, mother, sister, daughter, neighbor, etc. will think.  Some clients allow an almost adhoc committee to surround them and lend voice to what is beautiful, in style or goes well, or fits.  Input from those we live with can be helpful and guiding but, and here it comes – be very careful that your home doesn’t become an extension of the likes and loves of everyone but you.

Maybe it is because it is easy to get overwhelmed, there are so many choices out there to look at and consider.

newyorkdecOr maybe because it is so easy to get discouraged, new furnishings and many items of quality are a financial commitment.

elle2Whatever the insecurity cause, be sure to stick to a core concept.  Identify the feeling you want from your home and make selection from what you love and what you want to spend.  Even if because of time or money you can’t implement every aspect of a plan, still have one and understand it and work on visualizing it.  A consultation with a decorator, even if just for a few hours to establish a plan, can be very valuable. Redecorating by committee can be risky, especially if they are isolated comments, likes and dislikes discouraging you from moving forward with recreating a space resulting in what will make you happy.

Remember:  You won’t find a statue dedicated to a committee and the planning and interior decorating of your home won’t benefit from it either.

The past few weeks, I have spent several hours a day in various furniture, fabric, reupholstery and paint shops.  Much like my own shop/studio they are busy and piled high with client notes, work orders, fabric swatches, flooring samples and paint chips.

grand

There is a Grand Central Station type of feel.

Each year this hectic hurry happens and it is no wonder.  Instantly as the porch light is turned off after the last trick or treater, retail locations turn on the Christmas Music loop.  Playing one catchy holiday tune after another and without fail the fear of home decor inadequacy rings louder and louder.  The push to recreate the spaces in one’s home provides such pressure that the search and seizure of home decorating begins.  To help my clients steady their overwhelming surge for instant gratification I like to remind them that the beautiful homes for the holidays are the ones that offer a sense of relaxation and evoke personality and ideals.

In Jeffery Alan Marks “The Meaning of Home”,  the designer showcases his talent and work.  Although known as one of Bravo TV’s Million Dollar Decorator’s, it is his advice that offers the most value and why I continue to find myself looking to the pages for inspiration.  With chapters entitled Breezy, Tailored, Brave and at Ease, it is the section with the heading STEADY that sends a message to help cure the “hurry up and get the redecorating job done” exposure!  (2014 Word of the Year) -http://blog.dictionary.com/exposure/

He refers to the “steady” environment of a home resulting not by physical mass of furniture or the weight of drapes but from spaces that feel comfortable, honest and dependable.  He believes it is when the homeowners  bring in their sense of family, traditions and personal connections that a meaningful and steadfast haven is created.TGBLOG-5In my own home it is the thrill of using beloved handed down dishes such as these purple Johnson Brother’s British Castles transferware, circa 1930’s.  If you want to build your own vintage dish set for instant table charm and comfort,  look to local vintage shops and/or the etsy market.  Here are a few examples:  https://www.etsy.com/market/old_britain_castles

TGBLOG-1For Holiday Breakfast we often use our Vintage Staffordshire Myott Cottage Rose Dishes.

Room for One More, 1952

These were the same pattern Cary Grant and his family used in the 1952 movie “Room for One More”. Here is a link to a yummy Easy Breezy Breakfast Casserole Dish to serve on them. I found this from the Bayfront Westcott House Bed & Breakfast in St. Augustine, Florida.

So as the days keep slipping by and we quickly approach the Holidays, take inspiration from Britain’s Morale Boosting Motto during WWII :  “Keep Calm & Carry On”. TGBLOG-11

Do not allow the push and pressure and possible sense that your spaces lack magazine worthy appeal to discourage you.  If you aren’t happy with the way your home looks and feels by all means consider redecorating, making improvements and seeking help to do so but not under duress.  Allow yourself to breathe and ENJOY! the Holidays.  Take the time to develop a plan, cultivate ideas and allow time to reveal as Jeffery Alan Marks references your “own” meaning of Home..TGBLOGb-1

wednesday

The Addams Family creator, Charles Addams named the character after the well know nursery rhyme – “Wednesday’s Child is full of Woe.”

With October 31st only a few days away, the discussions of costume choice has come up a few times.  It is fun for me to hear how the people in my life plan to dress up for Trick or Treat.  From my grandson, daughters, and my niece, Haley who would make the most perfect Wednesday Addams (an inspiring role model for her) to my clients,  it runs the gamut and no matter the age they are equally enthusiastic!

Halloween is a great time to pull in the dramatic.  When a client has come to us asking for the dramatic, black has often been our go to color.  I find myself continuing to be enthusiastic about infusing black color schemes in paint; fabrics; furniture, wallpaper and accessories. Although it might seem a little scary it is anything but Woeful and instead quite Wonderful!

Black is often more effective showcasing equally dramatic art such as in this case with artist’s Mary Urquart’s Oil on Linen painting, “Last Light”.

If you are looking for great black paint suggestions try:  Benjamin Moore’s  (Halloween appropriate) Witching Hour.  We have also had great results with Farrow & Ball”s OFF-BLACK No. 57 – “more flattering to adjacent paint colors than jet black.”  While checking out what Farrow & Ball has to offer seek out their wallpaper options including the black and white lotus.

For additionally inspired inclusion and use of black in accents and furniture options check out Williams-Sonoma Home Fall, 2014 Catalog. Think French, 1940’s Elegance.

Black is the new Black and although there may be a trick to using it just right (you may need a little help from your decorator) in the end is a true treat in its sophistication and results.

I recently heard that Neil Patrick Harris was going to host the Tony’s again this year.  I love watching the Tony’s and who hosts makes a difference.  The announcement reminded me of when Neil Patrick hosted the 67th Annual Tony Awards in 2013.  He was amazing! He won an Emmy for his appearance. He was a part of several different ensemble performances that were real SHOW STOPPERs!  Lately my work has taken me in the direction of FINDING  those pieces that marvel, awe and absorb the admiration of my clients.  This often happens when starting a decorating project from scratch. The task is to create a cast of pieces that support that leading actor, I mean furnishing.   An ensemble when all pulled together stops the show.

media center

Katy Skelton‘s Vintage Media Center:  I originally found Katy Skelton‘s Furniture Designs after having a specific look for a console in mind for a client.  Seeking and searching led me to one of her pieces; an Industry Desk.

Elle-Dec1

From Elle Decor

The measurements were not quite right but the look was there.  The desk, with a little tweaking of measurements, could make a great console.  The creation of the piece involves etching the steel with copper.  The look is unlike other pieces and offers a varied look in the finish.  Additionally, the design offered side shelves which would work great to showcase a couple chosen items.  Many times independent designers can custom make a piece and it is smart to dialog with the designer to find out.  The direct inquiry led to reviewing other Katy Skelton Designs. The Vintage Media Center in a custom painted white was perfect to be placed in another home I was working on.

We LOVED the piece.  It was exciting to learn that this show stopper piece will also be a component in a Nancy Meyer’s movie, The Intern with Anne Hathaway and Robert Deniro, coming out in January, 2015. It is placed in the living room of Anne Hathaway’s character Jule’s brownstone home. Check it out HERE on Nancy’s Instagram!

Turner+Coffee+TableAnother piece we helped a client find was the Turner Coffee Table from Birch Lane.  The piece has this great top surface, a chalk-colored travertine with hints of grays and browns.  The legs are metal with an x-shaped base and an antiqued brass finish.

It was exciting to see the exact coffee table featured in this month’s issue of Southern Living and in a Southern Living coffee table decor video! See the video HERE!

Not every client is starting from scratch. If you aren’t and are instead restyling an existing space conceptually, restart with an empty room. Basically a clean canvas concept. Remember that rugs, window panels, textiles and accessorizes can be the item that offers the pizzaz. To prove my point check out www.angelaadams.com . Here are two different rugs from Angela we recently placed.

Image“Love begins at home, and it is not how much we do…but how much love we put in that action.”  -Mother Teresa

After seeking and searching and looking around we finally found the water view home we wanted to call ours.  It is hard to explain the why and and why nots of certain homes that you look at and decide not to pursue and the ones you do.  For me, the Bay house in Apalachicola was a place I could envision a life that I would love.

Apalachicola is an hour and forty-five minute drive from Tallahassee, our primary home, our place of work and school.  A wonderful drive along 98, the coast line that, once taken, transports one to a place where time stands still and yet passes twice as quickly.

AP-8

Trader’s Antiques – 107 St. James Ave., Carrabelle – 98 as you travel through Carrabelle, 850-697-2837

There are few stops between here and there; Trader’s Antiques, owned by Mary Graves and her cats is one of my favorites.  I met Mary a long time ago (approximately 17 years ago) when I was sitting behind her at a local junk/antique auction.  She was sweet, quiet and savvy.  She had a great eye that was supported by her experience and knowledge and she was committed to a price, not to go over or be outbid.  If you have ever attended an auction you know exactly what I am talking about.  I struck up a conversation with Mary and she kindly encouraged me to visit her at her shop in Carrabelle.  I asked her the hours and she shared with me that she was there most days, unless she had to be somewhere else.  If the Open sign was out, or if her truck was parked in front,  it was a good time to visit, just don’t let the cat get out.  AP-28For the most part I think that people rarely refer to the Carrabelle Treasure as “Trader’s Antiques” and instead refer to it as “Mary’s Place”.AP-20I recommend stopping by. I love to chat with Mary, it is the kind of visit that makes it a good day.  The stop in is everything I love about vintage find shopping.  Before I leave I will get a couple of updates on local happenings, a funny story and learn something new about a piece or two in the shop that has caught my interest in which I will typically purchase.

AP-21The Bay house came fully furnished.  It was tastefully put together and staged well. From a decorator’s point of view furnishings were to scale and of good quality.  The fully furnished even included dishes, utensils and unexpired food items in the pantry.  There was a supply of  laundry detergent and hair dryers left in the cabinets under the bathroom sinks.  The place was move in ready. There is something unencumbering about a fully furnished home.  You pack a bag and you go, once you fill the drawers and closets with some of your clothes, well then you don’t even need to pack a bag.  bay

It has only been a couple of weeks of a weekend here and driving over for a day + a night there to realize that the furniture and decorations of the previous owners, although appreciated for the freedom of having to furnish, will be edited as the inspiration for the love of art and pieces and how we function in the home are realized and determined.  As Architect and Designer Bobby McAlpine titled his book there is “The Home Within Us” and we Love this opportunity to Find it.  Don’t be surprised if there are a few pieces that were found @ Mary’s Place. bay2

MH-24“Adopt the pace of nature:  her secret is patience”                                                                                                                                                                                                                            – Ralph Waldo Emerson

I may be the only one still wishing people “HAPPY NEW Year”. It is relative.  We are ending only the fourth week into the new year and I haven’t seen everyone.

MH-27This time of year is always refreshing.  Typically decorating clients aren’t concerned with holiday deadlines and the rush to pull the spaces in their home together quickly to accommodate visiting family and friends.

The projects become more about the individuals living in the home and exploring the possibilities.  Time to explore allows for a more organic unfolding of ideas, solutions and yields more organic results. An unstressed pace allows patience to discover what, why and find and so it grows.  The redecorating has the opportunity to showcase the layering of one’s style, history and inspiration.  It is as if one is gardening the home’s interior to provide function and artistry.  Cultivated with a sense of time and a place for everything, weeding out what spoils the landscape and devoting to what will nurture the space.

AP-149Unfortunately technology, busy lives, the need for instant gratification and 42 1/2 minute  home decorating television shows (accounting for commercials) have perpetuated the sense that maybe Rome could be built in a day.  This decorator doesn’t subscribe to the add water for instant pop up results and instead encourages clients to take a deep breathe and decide to approach the project as  if a  holiday; “Time set aside by custom on which normal activities, especially business or work, are suspended or reduced and therefore not handle as business or work.”

AP-109Decorating is a building process, it intertwines and  has a domino effect.  Choices and inclusion lead to other choices and exclusion. Purchasing furniture without considering the big picture or choosing a color quickly because the painter can start the job next week can lead to mistakes, settling, disappointments in the overall results and be financially costly.  However, taking your time to understand the impact of each choice may lead you to a better one  and the creation of the room within you.

AP-36If you live in a room without windows and doors you become the air you breathe. – Stephanie Cunningham

The new year will abide by changing into the next season but only on its own schedule.   Making progress, creating an environment in our home that offers a sense of harmony, warmth, charm and one that shelters our daydreaming abides as well, allow yourself to enjoy the process and give it time.

My Mom, Ruthie, cooking on Christmas Eve (her birthday) in the 70’s.

My Mother’s birthday is Christmas Eve.  I remember her telling me that she really wasn’t very fond of a birthday that landed on Dec. 24th because her birthday gifts were often seamless with her Christmas presents.  It sounds horrible, but I too would forget.   Year after year I would shop for holiday presents checking off my mental list of friends and family, shop and shop some more until I reached that rejoiceful  moment of completion.  On December 23rd as I was wrapping all the gifts, bundles of paper and bobbles and bows a bound,  playing Christmas movies and sipping and slipping into the Holiday spirit, I would startle at the realization that I still had no gift specific and special for my Mother’s Birthday. I love shopping for gifts, it isn’t daunting to me and I have no grinch like tendencies but #!&  if I wouldn’t forget to buy my own Mother a birthday present.

txg4

My Mother seems pretty easy to buy for, she loves things with birds on them and has quite a collection, she loves to watch movies @ home on her vintage VHS or DVD player, a gift card to a few different stores, a framed picture of her grandchildren and now Great grandson would please her.

She will tell you not to worry about buying her anything and that she really doesn’t want or need anything. It was the first or second year after my Father passed away when my Mother shared with me that buying Christmas presents was just so overwhelming for her.  She doesn’t  drive so she always had to arrange shopping trips with friends to get out and about to find something for everyone.  She wasn’t too sure what everyone wanted and would have a tough time coming up with ideas so she would ask for a wish list to help her out.  It felt strange being an adult and making a list for “Santa”, so I didn’t create one. I asked her to forgo purchasing gifts for me and my family, after all, she was going to spend the Holiday with us and that was her gift.

shopchristmasNow that December is upon us and we have celebrated First Friday, my shop begins its descent in being open.  I’m sure that sounds strange, for the retail component of my business to not be open very much during what is a busy shopping time of the year.  This is Art of the Find’s 4th year.  We had our annual gratitude to be in business celebration the week before Thanksgiving.  We are grateful to all of those customers and clients who have allowed us to participate in their decorating projects.  This past week we had our annual tag sale to offer great finds @ bargain prices, many customers picked up vintage and unique books, furnishings, dishes, decorative pieces and art for inexpensive to give to friends and family. tag The shop, ornamented with outdoor holiday lights, celebrated December’s First Friday by offering food, beverages, extended hours and discount prices for in shop items.

Although we will not be open as much on Saturday’s or open late for last minute gift shopping, we do have a bit more work to do.  Our focus is helping clients finish up getting their homes in order to spend time with family and friends for the Holiday. FABRIC-7 It is also to pull together colors and concepts for client’s who will be starting their decorating work and projects in the new year and spending time with our own family and friends.  For the ingenuity of this solver is whether we are celebrating our memories or we are making them, it isn’t what we find wrapped in ribbons and bows but what our heart feels and knows.

I know that I will think of my Dad this season when we are at St. George Islands on the weekends, when the shop is closed, as he loved the peace, beauty and fun of the beach. The moments of all this yearsophie with my beloved family, friends and pups will be gifts I celebrate the most.EmypeteoceanpupsAND I know what I am giving my Mom for her Birthday!

Standing @ the Front Gate of My Grandparent’s Home in Norfolk, England.

All of my Grandparents lived far away.  My Dad grew up in Sycamore, Pennsylvania and My Mother in Norfolk, England.  One time my Grandparents from England- Frederica and Stanley- took a trip to the states to visit us in Winter Park, Florida.  During which they, along with my Mom, Dad, me and my two sisters, loaded up into my Dad’s 1972 Ford Country Squire Station Wagon to take the 15+ hour drive to  meet my other Grandparents, Beulah and Albert.  It wasn’t Thanksgiving but it might as well have been, we sang our own version of   “Over the River and Through the Woods to Grandmother’s House We Go with Grandma and Grandpa too.”

ford-country-squire-partsI have some meaningful memories of the times that we visited my Grandparents in Pennsylvania, even if they weren’t associated with Thanksgiving or Christmas.  One thing I definitely associate with my Grandma Beulah was the annual Christmas present of the Reader’s Digest subscription that she sent EVERY year.

reader's digest

Growing up we didn’t have a lot of books in the house.  Most of my reading, other than school work, came from the school or church library.  We had a bible, dictionary, a set of  Encyclopedia Britannia and the accumulated monthly Reader Digest editions that aligned a bookshelf in the living room.

The Reader Digest was an easy read.  The table of content was always on the front cover and the format consistent.   Each issue contained the same sections.  Their was a vocabulary page, a page of “Amazing Anecdotes”, a section called “Personal Glimpses”, “Humor in Uniform” and “Life in these United States”.  The articles were usually condensed from published books.  I liked that the articles had small, simple line drawings and  I often read through them during my high school years.

Yesterday at a client’s house, amongst many of the other spaces we will be working on in their new home, we took time to reflect on the outside front entrance.  The shutter color will change, there is a porch that we want to enhance and we talked about selecting a great color for the door.  Helping pick out a color for a client’s front door has been a frequent request.  Figuring out the best paint color to compliment their house, personalities and the message they want to convey as they greet and say their goodbyes is worthy of thought.

Art of the Find wishes you and yours a very HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Our doorway will be closed on Thanksgiving Day & Friday so we can spend time with our Family. We will be open on Saturday, Nov. 30th – celebrating Shop Small.

As I was thinking about what to recommend and the value of their front door, I remembered a specific and favorite article that appeared in a 1980 Reader’s Digest summer issue.  The publication featured a printing of a  commencement speech given by Alan Alda to his daughter’s graduating class at Connecticut College in New London, CT.  I had first read the article when I was 15  and it has stuck with me ever since.  The message was about our doorway;  the importance of the lasting words we say and that are said to us at the threshold of a doorway when one goes to leave.

“Deep in our hearts we know that the best things said come last. People will talk for hours saying nothing much and then linger at the door with words that come with a rush from the heart.  Doorways, it seems, are where the truth is told.” – Alan Alda

Me on the right sitting still for the picture. My older sister Vicki, such a great smile and my Mother Ruthie, tired from cooking the holiday meal.

Now that the holidays are  upon us, we will either be walking through doorways of family and friends or having others walk through our doorway to celebrate Thanksgiving.  As much as the focus is on the menu, cooking enough food, the number of chairs needed,  the setting of the table and making our homes look beautiful, we should think to take a deep breathe and enjoy our Holiday.   When it is all over and we are standing at the doorway to bid a fond adieu, it won’t matter how good the food was or how beautiful the home is.   The truth is, what does matter is as we open our door to say our goodbyes we will tell those we love and are grateful for,  just that.

pumpkin3

a photo taken at a favorite clients home – her young son had painted the pumpkin.

My Grandson, Gabriel, is two years old.  I am looking forward to seeing what his Mother, Emily, my oldest daughter, decides to dress him up as for Halloween.  His first year he was a skeleton in a onesie outfit and last year he was a dragon. gabrielpumpkins She has started the tradition of visiting the pumpkin patch and taking pictures of him in his costume.   gabrielpumpkin2I love remembering days of Halloween past and figuring out what my girls would dress up as, but there was this one particular Halloween season that made a huge impact and it was all over a pumpkin.

e7At the age of 4 Emily was enrolled in a part-time Pre-K program.  One of the team teachers requested a conference with me.  It was during that conference that the teacher shared the program’s belief that my daughter was quite artistically talented, beyond her years. Emily had loved to color, draw and create art since the time she was two.e1

She spent hours engulfed in her own world producing colorful pictures exuding happiness, but I didn’t realize the difference between her work vs. another child her same age.  I was shown an example of my daughter’s creations compared to that of other classmates for the same assignment.  The children were asked to free draw a snowman.  Although many of the pictures depicted a three-tiered circular being, it was Emy’s picture that additionally showcased a background scene and an inspired to scale snowman with a detailed belt and a flower on the hat.

e3

The next year In kindergarten, at the same school, she was soon to become a big sister as I was expecting my second child, Sophie.  It was almost Halloween and once again a teacher was calling me for a conference.  This time it was different.  I found myself sitting between Emily who was pressing her hands on the chair as if she was holding herself down anticipating the great winds of a tornado to carry her away and a seasoned teacher of 33 years with a self imposed sense of authority that passed the threshold of the classroom.

“With the pride of the artist, you must blow against the walls of every power that exists the small triumph of you defiance.”

-Norman Mailer

orange-paint-colorsThe teacher started off by saying that she was concerned that my daughter was DEFIANT. She expressed that this attitude would not serve my daughter well, and that if I didn’t nip it in the bud it wouldn’t serve me very well parenting her along with a new child.  As I asked for a specific example of what the teacher was talking about, I became bookended by frustration.  With that the teacher assertively placed down on the desk in front of me a coloring assignment my daughter had turned in.  It was a Xeroxed picture of a PUMPKIN with the instruction:  “Color the Pumpkin”.

“This pumpkin is BEAUTIFUL”, I said.  You see it was well executed, all the coloring with in the lines and it appeared to have texture.  Exasperated by my response, the teacher raised her voice and said “DON’T YOU SEE THE PROBLEM?” (truthfully, thankfully I did not!) “She colored the pumpkin BLUE!”

BluePaintColorChartI reviewed the picture again and reread the instructions out loud.  “Color the Pumpkin” I commented “the instructions did not indicate what color”.

It was apparent that with that said, this parent was, according to this on-the-brink-of-retirement teacher, defiant as well.  Her response was, with raised voice,  “THERE ARE NO SUCH THINGS AS BLUE PUMPKINS!!!!” With the final syllable of the teacher’s statement, my daughter with equal volume pointed her finger to the colored page and stated “THERE IS ONE RIGHT THERE!!!!”

Emily is soon to be 22.  Was she defiant growing up?  I suppose, there were a few occasions during her teenage years I would say she was boldly resistant and challenging.  When it came to her creating and her understanding her sense of self and being who she wanted to be, then she was ABSOLUTELY Defiant and I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. I learned a life lesson that day in the classroom many years ago; the unexpected can be beautiful and it isn’t for others to try to make you conform to their sensibility of how and what you create and I learned it from a true Artist that was dressing up as a little girl.  e8Emy&pumpkin

When Love is at the base of something, it is a masterpiece.

– Steve Maraboli

museumWhen I was growing up and family friends came over, my sisters and I and the family friend’s kids were banished to the playroom.  We were expected to play nicely, quietly and with out any argument or disturbance to our parents, or their parents but for certain our parents.  We weren’t always successful, after all there were usually at least 5 of us, sometimes up to 7.  The playroom, where we gathered, was only separated from the living room by an accordion door.  The options were a card game like go fish, war, concentration or the usual board type games, Sorry, Parcheesie, Operation (but according to my Mother made too much noise) and Monopoly.  GAME-6Friends stayed for long periods of time and one by one we would play the various games.  If someone kept winning then the others of us would whine, claim we were bored and want to start with a different game.  Each time I enthusiastically proposed we play the same game and typically it was passed over by a more popular group vote.  On the rare occasion, when my sibling’s and the other’s guard was down, they would agree to play my favorite of all times game, the Art Auction Game MASTERPIECE.

GAME-2“In this game, players compete with other players to bid on potentially valuable paintings, and negotiate with other players to trade these works of art, build a portfolio, amass money, and win the game”  ( a direct quote from the game’s description).  I loved it! The board was beautiful – A portrait of Rembrandt’s Father, Harmen Gerritiz van Rijn, (who my cousin Peter claimed was just a picture of some old woman with a beard) was featured in the middle of the board.  The cards showcased  other masterpiece artworks and on the back of each card it informed you of the artist’s name, the year the painting was painted, the name of the artwork, who owned or was patron of the artwork and that it could be found hanging in The Art Institute of Chicago.

GAME-5I loved this game so much that after we played I always neatly packed up the pieces and put it away in my bedroom closet.   Sometimes when I was on my own in my room I would bring the game out and test my memory of each painting’s name and the corresponding artist.

I guess it was after I had been away at college for 2 years when my Dad told me he was cleaning out closets and clutter and donated a bunch of stuff to the salvation army.  I didn’t pay too much attention until the next time I visited home and was devastated to learn that my beloved game was one of the items donated.

salvationarmyI decided I had to find a copy of the game.  I looked in toy stores, but unlike many of the other childhood board games it was no longer in production.  Apparently it had been originally manufactured in 1970 again in 1976 and then went out of print until 1996 and again went out of print after the 1996 series.  I looked for the game at garage sales, thrift shops, junk stores and places that sold vintage collectibles.  The 1996 version had a very different appearance but I never found that release despite the fact I was often in a toy store picking up items for my daughter, Emily, who was 5 years old at the time.  I had illusions of grandeur that she too would love the game as much as I had and we could play it together. I often described the game to shop owners and or others but no one seemed to have ever heard of it, not only did they have no recollection but they had no knowledge this Parker Brother’s game even existed.  So the years passed and Rembrandt’s portrait of his Father stuck with me as a part of my childhood lore.

SEP20-1

Currently there is a Rembrandt van Rijn exhibit at the Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts.  Drs. Tobia & Morton Mower have generously offered their vast collection of selected Rembrandt van Rijn etchings to show at the University.  Alicia and I, in an impromptu fashion, decided to meet an hour before we needed to open shop to go see the display.  It was a wonderful, unexpected way to start the work day.  I have often said the best things are unexpected and you can find great things when you aren’t really looking for them. The exhibit will remain up until October 6th.  I highly recommend taking advantage of such a wonderful opportunity to see such a beautiful collection, so up close.

SEP20-2

Not every work day affords me the opportunity to take in a museum exhibit.  Chances are if I am in town and out and about from the shop then I am searching for specific fabrics and or pieces for a client’ project.  There was this one particular job,  a child’s playroom I was creating for a client’s two daughters, that took me to a vintage store.  It was a co-op vintage and antique shop that rented booths out to different vendors.  I was looking for some solid wood children’s furniture pieces that had some charm.  The pieces I needed were little tables, chairs and bookcases that would be sturdy and that I could have sanded and painted.  I wanted pieces that the girls could use for themselves and their friends for activities such as drawing, having pretend tea party’s or playing games.

thriftI remember that this particular shop was going to be the last one I stopped in before needing to call it a day.  I was a bit weary but the store actually had a couple of the type of pieces I was looking for. The pieces would need sanding and repainting but with a little work the table and four chairs would be a perfect fit. I would have cushions made from a great textile I had purchased on the faith that I would find the chairs and tomorrow I would look for the bookshelves. The woman who worked at the place helped me load up and she shared with me that if I was interested she also had a vintage chalk board and a painting easel that she could bring in the next day.  I told her I needed some shelving and if she had any book cases I would return.  She wasn’t too sure what she had. She knew she had quite a bit of kid’s type stuff in storage and she would see what she could bring up that might work for my project.

GAME-1

I had thought about not returning the next day as it was going to take a bit of effort to fit in another trip to her shop but I managed to work in the time to go see what she may have brought in that I might be able to use, I really needed to find bookcases. In hindsight I suppose I could have called to learn that she hadn’t really found anything that fit the shelving needs and would have not made the trip.  Since I was there and she had been nice enough to bring anything and everything kid like that she seemed to think I might be able to use I went ahead and looked through what she had brought.  The vintage chalk board and easel were too dilapidated and just as I was disappointedly about to leave I stopped in shock.  There amongst bins of used crayons and paints, other items and games once used as pass times for other children’s amusement was a Parker Brothers circa 1970 complete with box and all bits and pieces board game I had forgotten I was looking for.  A little more than 22 years and $22 later I had finally found my Masterpiece!

FRONT DOORIt isn’t to suggest that it will take 22+ years and that you should or need to look that long but the truth of the matter is that sometimes that one great piece, especially if you love it or it is something close to outstanding, can take awhile.  Sharing what you are looking for with shop owners can help your cause.  A good shop owner will try and help you find what you are looking for by either making suggestions of where else to shop and keeping their eye out.  Take my advise, if you do FIND what you are looking for, buy it and be happy that you found it!  If instead of what you are looking for you find something that you Love then be careful not to hesitate because when love is at the base of something…
